Dear Parents and Guardians:
As we approach the end of the second semester, I am writing to inform you of upcoming testing that will directly impact your student’s promotion and graduation from high school. SOL testing will begin on Wednesday, May 9th, and will continue daily through May 18th for SOL-tested courses. Students who pass the corresponding SOL for a course in which they are enrolled will be exempt from taking the semester exam in that same course, which is a valuable incentive to our students to pass their SOLs the first time they take them.
Additionally, your student’s promotion to the next grade level and graduation from high school depend on his or her passing the required SOLs; therefore, please encourage your student to study, to go to sleep early the night before testing, and to eat a good breakfast on each day of testing. The SOLs this year include new technology-enhanced items and feature new interactive tools. Therefore, please encourage your student to go online and practice using the tools and answering the newly formatted questions. You and your student may access practice sites from the HHS homepage. Please visit http://hhs.sbo.hampton.k12.va.us/ and click on the practice links under the SOL icon.
Your student may practice at home, in the HHS library before and/or after school, and at any Hampton Public Library. Furthermore, please encourage your student to take full advantage of the free tutoring and remediation programs we have in place for our students. Our goal is for all of our students to pass their SOLs the FIRST TIME they take them.
Additionally, I have included with this letter the SOL testing schedule for May and June, in addition to the semester exam schedule and Hampton City Schools exam exemption policy, for your reference.
As always, we at Hampton High School appreciate your support as we help our students reach their full potential, which begins with passing SOLs so that students can graduate from high school, prepared for the future. Please call Hampton High School at 825-4430 if you have questions about your student’s academic progress or about testing.
Sincerely,
Myra A. Chambers Principal
